The Working Researcher is the Scientist's institutional subtype: a salaried role inside an organized research function — a corporate lab (DeepMind, IBM Research, Anthropic) or a university group. Where the Tech Genius chases the once-in-a-generation breakthrough, the Working Researcher publishes peer-reviewed work, applies for grants, and optimizes for citation impact and institutional progression. It is a legitimate, reachable path that the Tech Genius framing tends to obscure — you don't need to be Satoshi to do frontier research for a living. (Distinct from the Analyst, who publishes for clients and audiences on a commercial CV, not for citations on an academic one.)
How it earns
Salary plus research grants inside labs and universities; conference and citation reputation that compounds into senior research and PI roles; occasional advisory equity when the work gets commercialized.
How it fails
The publication treadmill, funding cuts, and post-doc precarity; staying purely academic when an Analyst or Educator translation role would carry the work further.
