Why Margaret is the canonical Working Researcher

Margaret Mitchell is a computer scientist whose two-decade career has been organized around a single question: how do you make AI systems behave fairly toward the people they affect? She trained in linguistics at Reed College, moved through computational linguistics at the University of Washington, and completed her PhD at Aberdeen on generating natural-language references to visual objects — a grounding in language and perception that would later shape how she thinks about what models see and say about the world. After postdoctoral work at Johns Hopkins and a research role at Microsoft (where she led the Seeing AI project for visually impaired users), she joined Google in 2016 and co-founded its Ethical AI team, co-authoring the 2019 "Model Cards for Model Reporting" paper that introduced a now-standard framework for documenting what a machine learning model is designed to do, what it cannot do, and where it may cause harm. She also co-authored the influential "Stochastic Parrots" paper on the risks of large language models. In early 2021, Google fired her following a dispute over research independence and her support for co-lead Timnit Gebru — an event that drew widespread attention to the structural tensions between ethics research and corporate AI development. She joined Hugging Face as Chief Ethics Scientist later that year.
