The Strategy Freelancer
Entrepreneurs & Operators
The solo vehicle for advisory work — sells frameworks and diagnostics under own name, no firm brand
The Strategy Freelancer does the same work as the Strategy Consultant but solo: frameworks, diagnostics, board-level recommendations sold under own name and invoice, with no firm brand to substitute for credibility. Maximum micro-freedom (own positioning, own framework-IP, own mandates), zero firm leverage — every credibility signal is earned through thought leadership and testimonials. The long-term asset is a personal brand plus a proprietary, named method; without it, this is the hardest conversion in the roster.
How it earns
Own-invoice daily rates (≈€1k-2.5k/day for senior independents in DACH; €3k+/day needs a recognizable boutique brand); retainers for ongoing access; proprietary framework-IP as the differentiator.
How it fails
Invisibility — the framework-IP exists but nobody knows it, so there is no inbound and no engagements; pure solo-strategy selling converts poorly without a visible personal brand.
Real examples across cycles

- Bruce Perens as an independent OSS-strategy advisor

AI
- Solo AI-strategy advisors
- framework-driven LinkedIn personalities (AI Applied is the boutique-brand version)
