Why Andrew is the canonical Educator
Andrew Ng is a British-American computer scientist who has done more than perhaps anyone alive to make machine learning legible to the world. After earning his PhD at UC Berkeley under Michael I. Jordan and joining Stanford as a faculty member in 2002 — where he directed the Stanford AI Lab and taught CS229, the campus's most enrolled course some years drawing over a thousand students — he co-founded Google Brain with Jeff Dean in 2011, building what became one of the most consequential deep-learning research organizations inside a technology company. He then joined Baidu as Chief Scientist in 2014, leading AI platform development until his departure in 2017.
Ng's defining contribution, however, is not any single research result but the deliberate, systematic project of education at scale. He co-founded Coursera with Daphne Koller in 2012, seeding it with his own machine-learning course; he later founded deeplearning.ai to offer the Deep Learning Specialization and adjacent curricula. Across these platforms, he has personally taught more than eight million students — a number that keeps growing. As of 2020, three of the most popular courses on Coursera were his. He also launched the AI Fund in 2018 — an initial $175-million vehicle for building AI startups — and founded LandingAI to help enterprises deploy AI in computer-vision workflows.
What makes Ng the canonical Educator of the AI cycle is the specific combination: research credibility at the frontier (Google Brain, Baidu, Stanford) paired with an unrelenting commitment to collapsing the barrier between that frontier and the broad market.
