Why Andrej is the canonical Educator

Andrej Karpathy was born in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia in 1986 and moved to Toronto at fifteen. He completed a BSc in Computer Science and Physics at the University of Toronto (2009), an MSc at the University of British Columbia (2011), and a PhD at Stanford University (2015) under Fei-Fei Li, focusing on the intersection of natural language processing and computer vision. At Stanford he also created and taught CS 231n: Convolutional Neural Networks for Visual Recognition, which grew from 150 students in 2015 to 750 in 2017 -- one of the largest courses the university had seen. That course became the de facto entry point into deep learning for a generation of practitioners.

Karpathy was a founding member of OpenAI in 2015, then joined Tesla in 2017 as Director of AI and Autopilot Vision, reporting directly to Elon Musk. After leaving Tesla in July 2022, he returned to OpenAI in February 2023 and departed again in February 2024. He then founded Eureka Labs in July 2024, an AI education company whose flagship product, LLM101n, and broader "Neural Networks: Zero to Hero" YouTube series have reached engineers worldwide. In May 2026 he joined Anthropic to lead a pretraining research team. MIT Technology Review named him an Innovator Under 35 in 2020; Time named him among its 100 Most Influential People in AI in 2024.

Karpathy is the canonical Educator of the AI cycle precisely because his output is not explanation as a byproduct of other work -- it is the work. The Educator's defining asset is an accumulating audience that compounds over time, and Karpathy has built exactly that: from Stanford lecture halls to millions of YouTube subscribers, each cohort of engineers trained on his material becomes a multiplier for the next. Where most technical communicators simplify after the fact, Karpathy constructs understanding from first principles -- rebuilding GPT-2 from scratch on a whiteboard, deriving backpropagation line by line -- creating durable intellectual infrastructure rather than consumable content. His career arc, from frontier researcher to industry operator to full-time educator and founder, demonstrates that teaching at this depth is itself a compounding strategic position.
