Shawn "swyx" Wang entered tech sideways: after years as a currency options trader and TMT hedge-fund analyst in quantitative finance, he taught himself to code and built a second career in developer experience at AWS, Two Sigma, and three devtool unicorns — Netlify, Temporal, and Airbyte. The throughline was never the employer; it was the habit he named in 2018 in his "Learn in Public" essay, now read by millions, which argues that the fastest way to learn anything is to share every step of it openly. That essay became the ethos of his 2020 book *The Coding Career Handbook* and, eventually, the founding premise of an entire media operation. Along the way he moderated the r/reactjs subreddit (200,000+ developers) and grew Svelte Society from zero to 15,000 members — an early sign that his real skill was building the connective tissue of developer communities.
