Increase the GDP of the internet. Zero-sum games are bad — we want to enable new businesses, new customers, and new economic activity that isn't already occurring.

Why Patrick is the canonical Scaler

Patrick Collison grew up in Limerick, Ireland, won the BT Young Scientist of the Year award at sixteen, and dropped out of MIT in 2009 — by which point he and his younger brother John had already sold their first company, Auctomatic, to a Canadian media firm. In 2010 the brothers co-founded Stripe, a payments API that solved a problem every developer building on the web actually felt: accepting money online was arbitrarily hard. Early backing from PayPal co-founders Peter Thiel and Elon Musk validated the thesis; by late 2016 Stripe was valued at $9.2 billion and the Collisons had become the world's youngest self-made billionaires. The company's stated mission — to increase the GDP of the internet — is not marketing copy but a precise description of what Stripe's infrastructure actually does: it removes the financial plumbing that would otherwise prevent a developer in Dublin or Nairobi from building a viable business.

What makes Collison the canonical Scaler rather than simply a successful founder is the combination of scale achieved and the breadth of institutional bets placed alongside it. He co-authored a 2019 Atlantic essay with economist Tyler Cowen that seeded the Progress Studies movement — an argument that the conditions producing scientific and economic progress deserve systematic study. During the COVID-19 pandemic he launched Fast Grants, distributing emergency research funding in days rather than the months academic grant cycles normally require. He co-founded the Arc Institute with his wife, Stanford biochemist Silvana Konermann, to fund long-horizon basic science outside conventional incentive structures. These are not side projects; they are the actions of someone who has internalized the Scaler's logic to its limit — that the leverage available to a category-defining company extends well beyond its own product. Collison joined Meta's board in 2025, further embedding himself in the governance layer of the technology cycle he helped build.
