Why Laurie is the canonical Journalist

Laurie Segall spent a decade as CNN's senior technology correspondent, arriving as a news desk assistant in 2009 and rising to cover the defining moments of Silicon Valley's rise and reckoning. She was in the room for early interviews with Sam Altman, Jack Dorsey, and Travis Kalanick before their companies became household names, and she sat across from Mark Zuckerberg at the peak of the Cambridge Analytica scandal — asking the questions the public most needed answered. Her 2017 CNN documentary series "Mostly Human" examined sex, love, and mortality through the lens of technology; her 2015 documentary on revenge porn won a Gracie Award. She left CNN in 2019 to found Dot Dot Dot Media, rebranded as Mostly Human Media in 2023, where she serves as CEO. The company continued the same humanist beat: Segall broke the story of a teenage boy's suicide linked to a Character.ai chatbot, bringing international attention to AI companion addiction, and produced "My Deepfake Relationship with Mark Zuckerberg," a Webby Award winner that examined AI disinformation from the inside. Her 2022 HarperCollins memoir, Special Characters, chronicled the decade she spent watching tech's promise curdle into scandal.

What makes Segall the canonical Journalist of the AI hype cycle is not access alone — it is her consistent orientation toward consequence. Where most tech coverage in the 2010s reflected the industry's own triumphalism, she kept asking what the technology was doing to people. The role of the Journalist in any hype cycle is to resist capture by the PR machine, to maintain editorial standards while operating under enormous pressure from a well-resourced ecosystem. Segall did this through the peak of social media optimism and into the era of AI euphoria, covering both from the same vantage point: the human being on the other end of the interface. Her pivot to independent media — founding her own studio rather than moving to a rival network — was itself a statement about the kind of journalism the cycle needed and major outlets were not producing.
