Why John is the canonical Developer

Carmack co-founded id Software in 1991 and spent the decade writing the engines behind Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and Quake — games that didn’t just sell; they established the technical grammar of first-person 3D. He pioneered or popularised adaptive tile refresh, ray casting, binary space partitioning, and surface caching, and his engines were licensed for Half-Life and Call of Duty, compounding his influence well beyond his own titles. A side project, Armadillo Aerospace, gave him a decade of amateur rocketry and two Lunar Lander Challenge wins, confirming a pattern: when Carmack finds a hard system, he writes toward its limits rather than around them. That output — sustained across ten years of platform-defining releases — makes him the exemplary Developer: not the scientist who discovered the underlying mathematics, but the programmer who turned theory into playable, shippable product at a pace no one else matched.

In 2013 he resigned from id to join Oculus VR as CTO, carrying the same instinct into consumer virtual reality. By 2019 he was stepping back to consulting status to free time for artificial general intelligence research, and in 2022 he left Meta entirely to found Keen Technologies, raising $20M for an AGI startup built on his conviction that small, incremental steps — what he calls “the magic of gradient descent” — are the fastest route to general reasoning. His public departure memo from Meta was characteristically direct: “We have a ridiculous amount of people and resources, but we constantly self-sabotage and squander effort.”

No developer of his generation spans as many distinct technology waves — PC gaming, 3D graphics, mobile, VR, and now AGI — while staying at the implementation layer throughout. He has never managed product strategy or built a media brand; he has written code. That discipline, held across four decades and five technology cycles, is what makes Carmack the canonical instance of the Developer role: the person who shows up at the frontier of each new platform and makes it real.
