Jensen Huang was born in Taipei in 1963 and came to the United States at age nine, eventually earning a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Oregon State University in 1984 and a master's from Stanford in 1992. He worked at AMD and LSI Logic before co-founding NVIDIA in April 1993 -- the founding meeting took place at a Denny's diner in East San Jose, a deliberate callback to his teenage years working the graveyard shift there as a dishwasher and busboy. With $600 in initial capital between three co-founders, he has remained the company's president and CEO for more than three decades, a tenure the Wall Street Journal has called almost unheard of in fast-moving Silicon Valley.

Huang's career arc is the Infrastructure Landlord archetype made tangible. While others competed to build the best games, then the best simulations, then the best machine learning models, Huang spent thirty years perfecting the compute substrate all of them required. The GPU started as a gaming accelerator, but NVIDIA's 2006 launch of the CUDA parallel-computing platform turned it into a general-purpose engine for scientific research, financial modeling, drug discovery, and ultimately deep learning. By the time the AI boom arrived, every serious researcher and every frontier model lab depended on NVIDIA hardware -- not because Huang predicted which applications would win, but because he had ensured the rails were in place before any single application existed. That is the shovel-seller logic in its purest form: profit accrues to whoever owns the infrastructure everyone else is forced to build on.

The results are measurable. NVIDIA's market capitalization crossed $3 trillion in June 2024 and $5 trillion in October 2025 -- the first publicly traded company ever to reach that threshold. Forbes estimated Huang's net worth at over $200 billion as of 2026, making him one of the seven wealthiest individuals on earth. Time magazine named him among the Architects of AI in its 2025 Person of the Year issue. The IEEE awarded him its Medal of Honor in 2026. None of it came easily: as late as 1997, with one month of payroll remaining, Huang kept NVIDIA alive on a $5 million Sega investment until the RIVA 128 chipset shipped and saved the company. The unofficial company motto -- we are thirty days from going out of business -- became a permanent fixture of his staff presentations, a reminder that infrastructure dominance is not granted, it is built under pressure.
