Why Alexis is the canonical Community Organizer
Alexis Ohanian co-founded Reddit in 2005, straight out of the University of Virginia, as part of Y Combinator's inaugural cohort — the first batch the accelerator ever funded. The initial pitch to Paul Graham was not Reddit at all: Ohanian and Steve Huffman had come in with MyMobileMenu, a food-ordering application. Y Combinator passed on that idea but invited them back. What they built instead was a self-governing architecture of communities: tens of thousands of subreddits, each with its own norms, moderators, and identity, loosely federated under a single platform. Conde Nast acquired Reddit in 2006 for a reported $10-20 million. The site eventually became 'the front page of the internet' not because its founders produced great content, but because Ohanian understood early that the job was to create the conditions in which communities could produce it themselves.
After stepping back from Reddit, Ohanian channeled the same instinct into capital deployment. He co-founded Initialized Capital with Garry Tan — one of the earliest institutional backers of Coinbase, Instacart, and Flexport — before launching Seven Seven Six (776) in 2021 as a solo general partner vehicle built around a different thesis: fewer bets, deeper relationships, more operator involvement. The firm name encodes a deliberate callback to Reddit's founding year, expressing the belief that infrastructure built for communities compounds in ways that pure financial capital cannot replicate. Ohanian has also backed and co-launched community-building projects outside venture: he was a founding control owner of Angel City FC, a primarily female-owned NWSL franchise, and co-purchased Digg with Kevin Rose in 2025.
As The Community Organizer, Ohanian is almost definitionally the archetype: someone who saw that the internet's latent potential was not information retrieval but belonging, and built the platform on which that belonging played out at scale. The role is easy to undervalue — community builders are rarely as visible as the companies that grow on top of their infrastructure — but the leverage is structural. Reddit's communities existed before Reddit had a business model, and they are precisely what made the business model possible.
